Carroll Community College (CCC) in Maryland received a $1.1 million state grant that will allow the college’s nursing program to accept students in the spring semester. Traditionally, new students have only been accepted in the fall semesters.

“The grant is an indicator of the high quality of instruction in our nursing program and it is a significant contributor to the growing number of students who enter the nursing profession,” said CCC President Faye Pappalardo.

As a result of the grant, the college will accept 32 more students into the program this fall and an additional 40 students annually each following year.

Midland College (Texas) received a $61,739 grant from the LI-COR Bioscience Corp. through the company’s genomics education matching fund program. The college will use the funds to buy equipment for DNA sequencing, which involves mapping molecules that make up the genetic code in a segment of DNA. The equipment will also allow the college to develop new laboratory experiences and undergraduate research projects for students beginning this fall. 

Central Florida Community College received a $32,000 donation from the Ocala Regional Medical Center to support the college’s associate degree nursing program and to help address the nursing shortage in the local community. Since 2002, the medical center has donated nearly $180,000 in support of the college’s nursing program.

Central Carolina Community College in North Carolina received a $200,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The college, in partnership with Lee County Schools and other community, business and industry agencies, will use the grant to train students in green building. At least 80 people will receive training under the program. The target groups are young adults ages 16-24, minorities and those with a high school or less education. The training will lead to national certifications in the green building industry and increased employment opportunities.

Seward County Community College and the Area Technical School in Kansas recently received a $90,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to develop a natural gas compressor technician program. The college will use the grant to hire and train an instructor and to renovate facilities at the technical school so the program can begin in fall 2010.

The Peralta Community College District in California was awarded a $2 million U.S. Department of Education Strengthening Institutions Program grant. The funds will allow Berkeley City College (BCC) to develop model

cross-disciplinary curricula to improve and track student success in basic skills and to ease their transition to universities and job training classes. The college will receive $400,000 annually for five years.

The Community College of Aurora (CCA) in Colorado received a $149,909 grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Community College Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Faculty Institute. The institute will train CCA faculty across disciplines in applying GIS technologies in the classroom in the spring semester.

Harford Community College in Maryland received a $27,602 grant from the Susquehanna Workforce Network for a training program targeting youths ages 18-24 who have an interest in pursuing careers in the building trades. The grant will help the college to create bridges with organizations in the trade. Upon completion of the program, students will be encouraged to apply for state-approved apprenticeship programs offered through the college.

Midland College in Texas recently received a $27,500 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for a GED Intensive Summer Program. The funds are being used to help eligible students pass a college entrance exam and become academically prepared for college. 

Camden County College (CCC) in New Jersey received a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The college will use the funds for a series of activities focusing on John Steinbeck’s Depression-era novel The Grapes of Wrath. CCC’s events will be conducted as part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

Bellingham Technical College (BTC) in Washington was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Seattle-based Norcliffe Foundation to build a new facility to house the college’s fisheries technology program. The funds will be added to BTC’s $6 million capital campaign to build the Northwest Center for Environmental, Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences, which will also serve as a fisheries research lab and classroom for visiting schoolchildren. 

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell (ENMU) received $5,000 from New Mexico Mutual to continue awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in occupational safety engineering and environmental management technologies. The scholarship program at ENMU-Roswell was established in 2008 by New Mexico Mutual. The program is administered through the ENMU-Roswell Foundation.
