Colorado
Arapahoe Community College (ACC) will offer more child-care stipends to students after receiving a $20,000 grant from the Denver Foundation. The funding is designated for low-income students who have children enrolled at the ACC Child Development Center.
Florida
Seminole State College of Florida received a $75,000 donation from the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation (OMYF) to establish the OMYF Molding Another Generation in College (MAGIC) Fund to support first-generation students. Programs will include mentoring, tutoring and financial-planning assistance.
New York
LaGuardia Community College will use a $250,000 MetLife Foundation grant to help educators across the country become more innovative and effective when teaching GED courses. Professional development workshops and technical assistance will focus on contextualized instruction strategies that help learners become college-and-career ready.
Ohio
Owens Community College (OCC) is partnering with the Grainger Foundation to provide 16 technical education scholarships. Grainger donated $10,000 to the college in support of OCC’s Alternative Energy and Sustainable Systems Technology Program. The funding will also help equip new laboratories at two OCC campuses, which will provide students with experience in wind turbine installation and maintenance, and with other alternative energy systems.
Pennsylvania
Bucks County Community College received a $10,000 donation from Waste Management in support of the college’s educational programs for schoolchildren. More than 20,000 students are served each year through activities ranging from summer day camps to the Artmobile traveling outreach museum.
Texas
Lee College is working to increase college readiness among high school students using a three-year, $600,000 grant from Gulf Coast Partners Achieving Student Success. The college will partner with an area independent school district to help close the gap between “high school preparation and curriculum and postsecondary readiness,” said Cathy Kemper, vice president of learning and instruction. The grant is funded by Houston Endowment and administered by the University of Texas Community College Leadership Program.
