​Oregon

A Portland Community College student from Cameroon used a $3,450 grant to give back to his village of Awing. Isaac Sunday received the grant from the Ndong Awing Cultural and Development Association. He used the funds to buy 50 benches, six-month salaries for four teachers and a table for a school in Awing.

Alabama

Wallace Community College (WCC) has acquired new patient simulation equipment for its health sciences simulation center through a $180,000-grant from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development. Nearly 5,000 WCC students are enrolled in health care programs or have declared a health-related major.


Michigan

Mott Community College received an end-of-the-year donation of $30,000 from an anonymous donor for its health sciences programs. The donor, a Flint-area resident, previously attended the college.

New York

LaGuardia Community College was awarded a $25,000 grant from the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) to implement programs to encourage Hispanics and other families to enroll in and complete college. The initiative will include a comprehensive set of interactive, bilingual online resources. Durham Technical Community College in North Carolina was also one of 10 organizations to receive an NCFL grant.

Pennsylvania

Bucks County Community College will use a new $152,000 National Science Foundation grant to establish an associate of applied science degree in applied engineering technology. The program will build on community partnerships with local employers. 

Rhode Island

A Community College of Rhode Island program to help nontraditional students succeed in college is being supported with a $100,000 grant from the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation. Adult learners in the program gain GED-readiness skills and take a three-credit college success course.
