New CEOs
John Cox will serve as the next president of Cape Cod Community College (Massachusetts), effective July 1. He will succeed Kathleen Schatzberg upon her retirement at the end of June. Currently, Cox serves as vice president for finance, operations and government relations at Harford Community College in Maryland. In 2010, He received the John Grenzebach Award for Outstanding Research in Philanthropy for Educational Advancement from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Frederick Keating is now president of Gloucester County College in New Jersey. He has served there as interim president since June 2011 and also as vice president of student services from 2010-2011. Keating is a recognized educational leader with 30 years of experience in higher education. He has maintained adjunct status at several colleges and universities, including LaSalle, Rowan, Rutgers and Camden County College.
Jay Lee has been named president of Northeastern Junior College in Colorado, effective March 12. Lee has served as vice president for instruction at North Idaho College since 2008. Previously, he was dean of career and technical education at Rochester Community and Technical College in Minnesota.
Jerome Webster was named the sixth president of Terra State Community College (TSCC) in Ohio, effective July 1. Currently, he is vice president for student and administrative affairs at the college. Webster began his higher education career over 22 years ago, and has served in various posts, including dean of student services at TSCC and as dean of student affairs at Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio.
Retirements
Rodney Allbright, president of Alvin Community College (ACC) in Texas, has announced that he will step down as president when his current contract ends in 2014. He began his tenure as CEO of the college in 1976—nearly 36 years ago. Allbright said he is particularly proud of the quality of education students receive at ACC, noting that its transfer students have a higher grade-point average than students who start their college education at a four-year institution.
Kudos
Martha Smith, who is retiring in August from her post as president of Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland, was honored last month by the Maryland General Assembly for her outstanding service to the state. With Smith at the helm, the college has achieved national recognition as a leader in cybersecurity education, workforce training and for student excellence. House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Thomas Mike Miller, Jr., each presented Smith with resolutions offering congratulations in recognition of “18 years of dedicated service and extraordinary leadership” and for “18 years of exemplary leadership.”
Appointments
Karen Stout, president of Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania, has been appointed as chair of Creative MontCo, a civic initiative that strives to shape the cultural and economic future of Montgomery County’s diverse communities.
The recently formed Task Force on Preventing Community Colleges from Becoming Separate and Unequal will be co-chaired by Eduardo Padron, president of Miami Dade College in Florida. It includes several other community college representatives, including:
Steve Castelloe, an instructor/coordinator of corporate training at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) in North Carolina, has been promoted to director of customized training. He succeeds Jerry Kinney, who recently retired after 18 years at GTCC. One of Castelloe’s most recent projects was organizing a training program for U.S. Transportation Security Administration employees at Piedmont Triad International Airport.
Glenn Coltharp is now vice president of academic affairs at Crowder College in Missouri. Coltharp has been in education for almost 30 years, with the past eight and a half years at Missouri Southern State University. He succeeds Herb Schade, who will retire at the end of June.
Janelle Crowley has returned to Elgin Community College (Illinois) as its new chief human resources officer. She was an adjunct professor at the college from 2000-2005. Previously, she served as director of human resources for the city of Woodstock.
Beth Hogeland has been selected to serve as the next executive vice president of academic affairs and workforce development at Linn-Benton Community College (Oregon), effective April 1. She succeeds Carol Schaafsma, who will retire in June. Hogeland has served as dean of liberal arts, social systems and human performance at the college since 2009. She has been with the college since 1990.
Tommy Minton has been named associate dean of mathematics at Seminole State College of Florida. Minton, who taught mathematics at the college for nearly seven years and most recently served as lead instructor for Statistical Methods, has been teaching in some capacity since 1994.
Christopher Allen Tanner joins Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) in Pennsylvania as its new director of culinary arts. He previous served as a chef instructor at Schenectady County Community College in New York. In 2011, Tanner was named the American Culinary Federation’s Chef Educator of the Year for the Capital District-Central New York region.
At Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee, Mary Nunaley has been named director of distance learning, and Kenny Yarbrough is the new director of student life and diversity. Nunaley has served as interim director, instructional designer and associate professor at the college. Yarbrough was most recently associate director at the Renaissance Education Group in North Carolina.
Obituary
Don Wessel, a founding member of the board of trustees at Ozarks Technical Community College (Missouri), has passed away at age 86. Wessel served on the board from 1990 until his retirement in 2008, when he was named trustee emeritus. He was board president from 1992-1994.
