​Retiring CEOs

Ernest Moreno, who has served as president of East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in California since 1994, will retire on Aug. 30. Moreno was appointed vice president of academic affairs at the college in 1991. Prior to ELAC, he served at the Los Angeles Community College District as chief negotiator for collective bargaining contracts, assistant director of labor relations and director of employer/employee relations. Moreno has been recognized for his leadership by receiving the John W. Rice Diversity Award from the state, being named outstanding administrator of the year by the American Association of Hispanics Association in Higher Education and receiving the Steve Allan Excellence in Education award.

Trustees

At Johnston Community College in North Carolina, James Narron and Haywood Watson have been reappointed to four-year terms on the board of trustees. Reappointed by the Johnston County Board of Education, Narron has served as a college trustee since 2003. He is a lawyer in the firm Narron, O’Hale & Whittington. Watson was reappointed to the 13-member college board by Gov. Beverly Perdue. The retired educator has served as a JCC trustee since 1995.

At Central Piedmont Community College (North Carolina), Wilhelmenia Rembert has been appointed to the board of trustees and Carlos Sanchez has been reappointed. Both will serve on the board through June 2015. Rembert, a partnership specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau, was appointed to the CPCC board by the Mecklenburg County Commissioners. She previously served at a university for 28 years as a professor of social work and 12 years as vice president for graduate studies. Sanchez is director of statewide affairs for AT&T North Carolina. An appointee of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board, Sanchez first joined the CPCC board in 2007.

Appointments

Steve Daniel, former vice president of economic development programs at Flint River Technical College (FRTC) in Georgia, has been appointed provost at Southern Crescent Technical College (formerly FRTC). Daniel most recently served as director of Georgia QuickStart. He has 20 years of private industry experience, serving in a number of executive management roles with Boeing, Lucas Aerospace and TRW.

C.J. Karamargin, chief spokesman for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), will join Pima Community College (Arizona) Aug. 29 as its vice chancellor for public information and government relations. Karamargin worked as Giffords’ communications director for four years. He served as the official pipeline for information about the congresswoman after she and 18 others were shot in Tucson in January.

Beth Stewart has been appointed dean of arts and sciences at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (North Carolina). She formerly served as director of institutional effectiveness and special assistant to the president at Jackson State Community College in Tennessee. Stewart also served as director of assessment/SACS coordinator, department of communication and fine arts chair and associate professor of speech during her 13 years at Jackson State.

At Excelsior College (New York), Mary Beth Hanner is now provost and chief academic officer and Patrick Jones is vice provost. Hanner previously served as interim provost, as well as vice president for outcomes assessment and institutional research, where she led initiatives for measuring student learning outcomes in learning assessment and competency-based education. Jones previously served as dean of assessment at the college.

Kudos

Mary McLaurin, a volunteer in the English as a second language program at Wake Technical Community College (North Carolina), has been named North Carolina’s Basic Skills Volunteer of the Year by the North Carolina Community College System. McLaurin has volunteered at Wake Tech for 11 years, logging in 200 hours in the past year alone. Last year, 120 volunteers contributed 3,500 hours to help students in Wake Tech’s Basic Skills programs.
